Without an efficient, smooth running Communications Center,
even the best of Police Departments will come to a grinding
halt. The Augusta Police Department is no exception.
The Augusta Police Department Communications Center not only
maintains dispatch capabilities for the Police Department, but
the Fire Department including rescue services as well. The Communications
Center is supervised by the Records Division Commander, Lt.
J. Christopher Read and is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a
week by 8 full time dispatchers. The "radio room"
handles approximately 49,000 registered case calls a year from
the public as well as countless telephone inquiries, and walk-in
customers in the reception area, while still maintaining radio
traffic from the patrol units out in the field.
Along with the obvious radio/telephone work, the dispatchers
are also called upon for records management, data entry, collection
of city fees, and other clerical duties during the course of
their shift.
The Augusta Police Department has a TDD (Telecommunications
Device for the Deaf).
